Understanding SQL Server backups and disaster recovery with Paul Randal

Wednesday, June 17, 2009 by Joshua Hoffman
Do you really need backup and disaster recovery for your SQL databases? SQL Server expert Paul Randal answers that question in this month's TechNet Magazine (Psst - the answer is yes, but only if you care about your data.) The more important question though, isn't whether you need to back up your databases - it's how to do so. What's the difference between Full SQL Backups and Differential Backups? Where do Transaction Log Backups come in? How do you know which technique (or more likely, combination of techniques) to use, and when? How do you test SQL backup and recovery integrity so you can be certain that you're able to restore your data if the unfortunate need should arise. Paul is the perfect person to answer all those questions for you, so be sure to give this article a read.

While we're on the subject, we've posted a video to the AppAssure Web site with SQL Server MVP Bryan Oliver, where he covers some essential tools for the SQL Server DBA. Be sure to give that a look, too.
